This week, we’re trying to help a young mum called Becky and her baby boy, Leo.
Becky is 22 and grew up in the care system. When Leo was born, the two of them were placed together in a mother-and-baby foster home, where they lived for almost a year.
The worries at the time were about Becky's relationship with Leo's father, who has a history of drug use and has also been trouble with the police. It was an unstable home, with a lot of arguments between Becky and her partner. When Becky understood the effect this was having on her little boy, she ended the relationship to keep him safe.
From then on, Becky has done everything she can to be the best mum to Leo, all while getting through a year of stressful court hearings, assessments, reviews and meetings.
Earlier this year, it was agreed that Leo should stay with Becky, in a home of their own. Everyone involved agreed that separating them would have been harmful to Leo, and that Becky had given him excellent care and built a strong, loving bond with him,
Leo’s social worker, who was the independent guardian appointed to represent Leo, said: “She is an inspiration to other care leavers who have children, and in my experience few have worked as hard as Becky."
Becky and Leo have now moved into their own flat, but they are starting almost from scratch. While they lived in the foster home, a lot of their furniture and many of Leo's things were ruined by mould and damp and had to be thrown away. Becky received a leaving care grant, but most of it was spend on the deposit and securing the tenancy. She has managed to pick up a few second-hand bits and pieces, but their flat is still missing some of basics that they need.
Becky has had a really tough first year as a new mum, and has shown so much courage and determination through it all. We'd love to do something kind for her and Leo, and help turn their flat into a home.
