This week, we’d like to help a grandad called Gary who is raising his grandchildren on his own. Life hasn’t been easy for them, and their home is in a poor state.
The two boys went to live with Gary a few years ago under a care order. Sadly, they weren’t able to stay with their mum because there were serious concerns about their wellbeing – including neglect, lack of stimulation, domestic abuse in the home, and alcohol misuse. Social services had been involved with the family for several years, and in the end, it was decided the boys would be safest with their grandad.
Since then, Gary has done everything he can to give the children the love, stability and care they need. One of the children has additional needs and his school is over an hour away so it’s been challenging. Money is extremely tight, but Gary never complains, he just gets on with trying to give his grandchildren the best life he can.
The headteacher at the children’s school said: “Gary is very proud of the boys and is always very keen to support school. He attends all our social functions - even though the school is over an hour away from his home. I whole heartedly believe the family deserves some kindness.”
We'd like to help Gary sort out the house and provide some flooring, replace some broken furniture, repaint some of the rooms, and provide some football kit, books and toys for the boys - and anything else they need to make life a bit more comfortable for them all.
