#512 Amy's family

Request: Donations / Gifts / Kind messages

This week, we’d like to help a family who recently lost their 8-year-old daughter, Amy.

Amy was 18 months old when her heart suddenly stopped. She was unconscious for a long time before paramedics were able to revive her. She suffered a major hypoxic brain injury and spent the next couple of years in hospital.

Her family eventually had to relocate to Oxfordshire to be closer to the hospital, leaving behind their home, their friends, and their entire support network.

Despite everything she faced, Amy was a smiley little girl who loved being outside and understood so much of what was going on around her. Her parents and her 16-year-old big brother cared for her around the clock for almost 6 years to give her the very best life they could.

In July, Amy sadly passed away. She was only 8 years old. Her family are heartbroken and their home feels painfully quiet. And on top of their grief, they now have a lot of financial worries too.

Amy’s mum recently needed emergency surgery, and neither parent is well enough to work at the moment. They live in a council property and have fallen behind on their bills. Their son is trying to keep up with his school coursework, but it’s been really tough.

They were nominated by a support worker from a children’s charity who told us that a little bit of kindness would make an enormous difference for them all right now.

We’d like to provide some things their son needs for school, buy Christmas presents, pay off their utility bill debts, and provide some grocery vouchers so they can try to relax and just be together in lead-up to their first Christmas without Amy. It will help give them some breathing space to grieve without the financial stress looming over them.

What We Did

In the past two days you have given more than £2000 in donations and gifts to help Amy’s family ❤️🎉. We have now paid off their outstanding bills, bought things for the teenage son’s course, sent Christmas presents and we will be able to provide lots more support over the next couple of months for them. The family can’t believe the outpouring of kindness from complete strangers. They have been in such a dark place and you have shone a little bit of light.

This is a message re received from Amy's mum:

“We would like to thank you from the bottom of our broken hearts. We would like to thank each and every donor who has shown us that there is a big world out there full of love, kindness and support that we had forgotten all about.

This week hasn’t just been about the money donated or the gifts sent. It’s been about the messages of love and support we’ve received, and knowing that Amy has touched so many lives with our story.

This week has been about watching my son smile, even just for a little while, for the first time in a long time, when he got to open his gifts sent from lovely people he has never met. That was priceless.

The kindness from donors has also made it possible for us to eliminate some of the financial debt we were in, meaning we can try to grieve without worrying that the next knock on the door will be from a debt collector, or that the next phone call will be chasing us for money.

We wish everyone involved in making these things happen health, wealth and happiness. Through your names on the messages, we will never forget you and you will all be in our prayers.”
