This week, we’d like to help Sahra and her two children who were kept prisoners in their own home.
Sahra came to England with her children to be with her husband. They had been married for many years but lived apart. He had always been kind to her and the children, but once they arrived in the UK, everything changed. Her husband took away their passports and documents, and controlled every part of their lives. They weren’t allowed out alone and he was abusive, so they were all terrified of him.
One day, when he wasn’t watching, Sahra took a huge risk and managed to run with her children to a neighbour’s house. The neighbour took them to the police station and they were placed in a women’s refuge. Since then, they’ve been moving between refuges for 9 months.
Sahra’s son has complex additional needs - he’s non-verbal and isn’t in school at the moment. Her older daughter is an incredible support to her. She is a star pupil and her English is brilliant, so she also often acts as a translator for her mum, who is still learning.
They have just left the refuge and moved into a flat, but they don’t have many belongings.
Their support worker said “Sahra is a lovely, grateful, generous woman, and her children have learnt those traits well too. It would be wonderful if they could have some help, as they have been surviving with very little for so long.”
We’d like to help.
