This week, we’re trying to provide buggies and strollers for 27 mums living in extreme poverty.
We sometimes work with a small charity called The Magpie Project, which supports homeless mums with children under five. Most are not eligible for benefits and are living in temporary accommodation, often with entire families all in one room. The Magpie Project provides essential support for the women and their children, but the waiting list for buggies - in their words - 'has gotten out of control.’
Jane, who runs the project, said: “Anyone who has been in charge of a baby or toddler will know how essential a good buggy is – but for our mums, a buggy becomes a life support system.
“It’s a home from home for the baby of a sofa-surfing mum who has nowhere to be in the day, a transport system on long walks when mum can't afford the bus, the only means of carrying shopping as mum doesn't have a bank account to order online, a high chair to eat in when there is no room for a table and chairs at home, and a safe place to be when mums are spending all day trying to get the food, support and advice they need to meet baby's needs.”
With your help, we’d like to make sure every single mum on their waiting list receives a buggy. We've set up a wishlist with some of the items they need and we’ll use your donations to buy more. They need buggies, strollers, double buggies, buggy boards, change bags and accessories.
