#321 Simon

Request: Donations / Gift Cards / Messages

This week we’d like to help a 57-year-old man with cancer who has recently lost his possessions. Simon has had multiple cancer diagnoses and has been unable to work for many years. He was diagnosed with cancer for the third time this year and has recently completed radiotherapy treatment, which has left him quite debilitated.

Simon lives with a carer in a basement council flat, but it was flooded with sewage during heavy rains in the summer. He has been struggling financially and sadly had no insurance.

Simon has been housed in temporary accommodation (a small hotel room) for the past few months and is due to move home this week. But he has no cooker, no bed or bedding, and very few clothes.

His support worker said: “He has been incredibly resilient and remarkably gracious throughout all the time I've known him, but he is exhausted. We’ve been trying to find help so we can replace some of his ruined possessions and give him a chance to set up a home again.”

We’d like to provide Simon with the essential things he needs and make him as comfortable as possible so he can focus on his health.

What We Need

1. Donations: We'll use your donation to buy Simon a bed, mattress and cooker. Anything we raise above what's needed will be used to help him in other ways.

2. Gift cards: Simon isn't moving back in until the end of the week, so we can't set up a proper Amazon wishlist for him yet. So instead, we've put gift cards on the list, which we will use to buy all the smaller things he needs for the home. To send a gift card, click the link below.

3. Kind messages: Simon's been through a really awful time, and we'd love to send him some kind messages to let him know there are lots of people out there thinking of him. To send a message, please post it to: 52 Lives (Simon), PO Box 3154, Reading, RG1 9AT. Or you can email a message by writing it in the form below (we will pass your message along but your contact details will not be shared).

What We Did

Thanks to all of you, we were able to provide some white goods, a bed, blinds, kitchen appliances, clothes, as well as grocery vouchers and lots of kind messages. Simon wanted us to donate the last of the donations (£200) to someone else in need, which we have now done. This is an extract of a letter he wrote to thank everyone who helped him…
