#275 Five children

Request: Donations / Gifts from a wishlist / Messages

This week, we’d like to help 5 children who were found living in terrible conditions. Their mum has been struggling with her mental health and had been avoiding contact with family members since the first lockdown.

When she finally let them visit, they found her and the children living in a dreadful state.

The house was filled with rubbish and old food, every piece of furniture was damaged and stained, and there were no working toilets. The children were all sleeping on a sofa, and the older children were caring for the youngest, who is just 1 year old.

The children’s social worker described the living conditions as one of the worst she has ever seen.

The mum is in hospital at the moment, as she had a severe infection and had to have surgery. The children were placed into temporary accommodation, with extended family members taking it in turns to care for them. The extended family have been incredible, and even gave the children a pretend ‘Christmas Day’ as they hadn’t had the chance to have a proper one. Without them, the children would have been placed into care. It is hoped that, with social services and the family now aware of what's going on, the mum will get the support she needs to be able to care for the children.

Their home is being repaired, and the family members have taken on the huge task of clearing it all out. But it’s going to be left almost completely empty. With your help, we would like to fill it with everything they need before the children return, to give them a fresh start.

What We Need

1. Donations: We will use your donations to buy some of the bigger items they need. 100% of what you give will be used to help this family. To make a donation online, please click the link below. To make a donation by text, please use the details in the box below.

2. Gifts from a wishlist: We've set up an Amazon wishlist filled with the things they need. To buy from the wishlist, please click the link below and choose a gift from the list. When you check-out, please tick 'This is a Gift' and select the gift registry address as the delivery address - it will show as 'Matt (and children)'. Your gift will be sent directly to the family member supporting the children at the moment, who is storing them until the house is ready to move back into. If the wishlist is empty, it means all of the gifts have been purchased already.

3. Kind messages: This hasn't been an easy time for the mum, and we'd love to send her some kind, supportive messages. To send her a message by post, please use 52 Lives (Life # 275), PO Box 3154, Reading, RG1 9AT, or you can email a message by writing it in the form below (your message will be passed along but not your contact details).

What We Did

The response we had to this request was overwhelming. We provided white goods furniture, beds, mattresses, bedding, crockery, cutlery, cleaning equipment...everything they needed for a fresh start. We also sent clothes, toys, books and school supplies for the children. Best of all, we sent them all of your kind cards, messages and gifts. The messages you sent – especially for their mum – were beautiful.

It was really heartening to see people put aside any judgement and just provide the love and support that was needed.

The children have just moved back into their home, and the mum is now getting the support she needs. To say you changed their lives in an understatement. Thank you all so much for doing this for them.

This is a card I receive from their mum today...
