#165 TJ

Request: Donations for a bed / Tickets to the Lion King / Messages

This week, we’d like to change the life of a 7 year old boy from Kent called TJ.

TJ has severe disabilities (he has Pitt Hopkins Syndrome). He can’t speak, can only eat blended food, is in a wheelchair and has severe developmental delays. He is cared for by his mum, Melissa, with the help of his older sister, who is classed as a young carer due to everything she does to support her little brother – even getting up during the night to help her mum lift him back into bed. TJ also has a 12 year old sister.

TJ is in desperate need of a new bed that’s suitable for him. He falls out of his current bed all through the night, and his mum has injured her back from constantly having to lift him. TJ also throws himself back onto the walls, hurting himself. They have found a specialist bed that would solve all of these problems and keep TJ comfortable and safe, but it comes with a huge price tag.

TJ’s social worker told me that this bed will change TJ’s life.

Melissa is holding so many little fundraisers to try to raise the money…selling sweets, sponsored walks....anything and everything she can think of. She has raised a couple of thousand pounds so far, but she has a long way to go. With your help, we’d like to help get her within reach of her target.

As well as helping TJ, we’d also like to do something kind for TJ’s sisters, who have made a lot of sacrifices over the years to help their little brother. With your help, we can spread some much-needed kindness to the whole family.

What We Need

1. Donations towards a bed: TJ's mum needs to raise almost £8000 to buy the specialist bed he needs, which will last him until he is an adult. It's a huge amount, but every penny we can put towards it will make a difference. To make a donation, please click the link below. 100% of what you give will be used to help buy TJ his bed. Any amount we raise above what is needed for the bed will be used to help TJ and his family in other ways.

2. Tickets to the Lion King: TJ's sisters rarely get to do anything special for themselves. I asked their mum what the girls would most enjoy, and she said they have always wanted to see the Lion King musical. We would love to make that happen for them. If you are able to help, please fill in the form below and let us know.

3. Kind Messages: To send a message to TJ, his mum Melissa, or his sisters, please fill in the form below (please note, your email address will not be passed on). Alternatively, messages can be posted to: 52 Lives (Life 165), PO Box 3154, Reading, RG1 9AT.

What We Did

- We raised £2000 and TJ has his new bed! It is going to make such a big difference to his life. Thank you so much to everyone who helped or sent a kind message. A special thank you to Hayden (a young boy we helped just after TJ), who donated some of his funds towards TJ’s bed.

- We managed to arrange tickets to the Lion King, a signed programme, and a back-stage tour to meet some of the cast! Thank you so much to the people who made this possible - the lovely and talented actor, Vivien Parry, who put us in touch with Disney’s David Curl. David went above and beyond anything we were hoping for and made the whole experience an amazing one for TJ’s sisters. A big thank you also to Leslie Manning for making a generous donation to buy the tickets for the family.

And finally, thank you to all the children at Holy Trinity Primary School in Wimbledon, who madebeautiful cards and gifts for TJ. They are decorating his room and bringing him a lot of happiness!

Thanks so much everyone. Your help has made such a big difference TJ and his family.
