#19 Middleton Primary

Request: Love for Olivia

This week 52 Lives headed up the motorway to the beautiful town of Middleton in Derbyshire where we were welcomed by the children and staff at Middleton Community Primary School. The day was a tremendous success and the children were incredibly enthusiastic throughout the 2 hour workshop.

The children were told all about an amazing young girl called Olivia. Olivia is 15 years old and has a 10 year old sister called Mollie. Sadly Mollie was born with a rare genetic disorder which has left her severely disabled. Mollie, now receives palliative care at home.

Olivia was just 4 years old when Mollie was born, and has put herself last ever since. Olivia helps look after her sister from the moment she gets home from school. She has never been able to do any after school clubs, has never had a birthday party, and she has spent most Christmases in hospitals or hospices. She worries a lot about Mollie so apart from school, she rarely leaves the house, in case something happens to Mollie and she’s not there to say goodbye.

Lizzie (Olivia and Mollie’s mum) said: “Olivia is an amazing sister to Mollie but she’s missed out on so much and I just feel I've let her down. She's never been able to do any of the normal things that children do. I still remember her, at just 6 years of age, guiding the ambulance in for her sister – that was normal for her. Her whole life has been about her sister and I would love for her to have a treat that's just for her.”

Upon hearing Olivia and Mollie's story the children at Middleton Primary could not wait to send Olivia some much deserved love and support. Cards, posters, friendship bracelets, Origami animals and letters were all made in mass. All containing the most beautiful pictures and messages letting Olivia know just how incredible she is. Some children even made games for Olivia and Mollie to play together.

We are in no doubt that Olivia and Mollie will absolutely love all the gifts that the children at Middleton Primary have made for them and we hope it further illustrates to Olivia what a very special sister she is.
