#171 Sarah and her family

Request: A holiday / Donations / Days out / Messages

This week, we’d like to help a mum of 2 from Surrey to do something kind for her family.

Three years ago, Sarah was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 34. Her children were 3 and 5 at the time. Sarah had to go through chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery and couldn’t work anymore. Her husband, Peter, was trying to work, look after the girls and also be there for her. And then, on the final day of Sarah's treatment, Peter's dad died suddenly. It was such a difficult time for all of them.

While Sarah was recovering from her treatment, Peter was made redundant from his job. It was a struggle, but they managed. Peter found full time employment last year, but shortly after they were hit with more bad news. Sarah’s cancer had returned. This time, she had to have a mastectomy.

“My husband has been my rock. All the pressure seems to fall on his shoulders, and he has kept so strong and positive - I don't know how I can ever thank him enough,” Sarah said.

“One of the hardest parts of my re-occurrence last year was telling the girls. They couldn't understand how I broke a promise that my cancer had gone for good."

Sally feels like Peter and their girls have had to make so many sacrifices to help care for her. They have all been through so much heartache and worry during the past three years.

“They deserve to smile more," Sarah said.

With your help, we would love to do something kind for them.

What We Need

1. A holiday / days out - Sarah would love to be able to surprise her family with a holiday this summer - something they wouldn't otherwise be able to do. Or even just to be able to take her girls on some fun days out in the school holidays would mean so much to Sarah. If anyone can help with a holiday, or tickets to a theme park, tickets to the cinema...or anything similar, please fill in the form below and let us know!

2. An anniversary present - Sarah and Peter missed on out celebrating their 10th wedding anniversary last year, as Sarah was just out of the hospital. We would love to help them celebrate now - either with a meal out, a night away somewhere. If you can help, please fill in the form below to let us know.

3. Donations: Donations will be put towards a holiday, days out for the girls, and anything else that we feel would help the family. To make a donation, please click the link below. 100% of what you give will go to helping them.

4. Messages: To send a kind message for Sarah or Peter, please write your message in the form below (your name and message will be passed along but not your email address), or you can post it to :

What We Did

Thanks to you, this is what we were able to do for Sarah and her family

- We just booked them a summer holiday! This is something they never thought they would be able to do. Sarah is so happy and grateful to be able to do this for Peter and the girls, who have sacrificed so much recently.

- A belated 10th wedding anniversary celebration. Sarah and Peter missed on out celebrating their 10th wedding anniversary last year, as Sarah was just out of the hospital, so we are sending them away for the weekend later this month - thanks so much to the kind people at Sales Filter for arranging this for them.

- Tickets to Legoland. A lovely lady called Lynn Mwaka donated Legoland tickets for the Sarah's girls.

- Beautiful patchwork quilts for the girls, thanks to the very talented Beth Dickinson.

- And finally, we are sending so many kind messages of love and support to the whole family. Thanks so much to everyone who sent a message for them.

Dear Jaime,

I wanted to write and properly thank you and all the wonderful people that have helped us.
When it's been so tough and there is little to look forward to I could have never have imagined feeling so buoyant as Peter, I and the kids do now.

I have attached a photo of the reaction to me telling Peter and the kids that we are going away.
It's so unbelievable and thanks to you and 52 Lives, they have truly found their smiles again. With things to look forward to this summer I feel like we can put our troubles to one side and enjoy ourselves.

You are an inspiration and the people that show their kindness through your website are simply the most generous and wonderful too.

With love and best wishes
Sarah x
